Magnavox MDR557H/F7 1Terabyte Hard Disc Drive Digital Video Disc Recorder

After a week of trial and error I am enjoying this great recorder. After studying the maual I decided that the Component hook up with 3 video and 2 audio wires would work best for my Sony Bravia TV. However when I followed all the directions, I got agreat picture and everything worked — but I got a buzzing or humming sound. It was not enough to block the audio but it was very annoying. After trying everything else, I decided that an HMDI 2 cable might be the answer. I purchased one and when I hooked it up presto! No Buzz! However, when I tried to use closed captions they did not appear. I went on line and discovered a forum called videohelp.com.. It seems I wasn’t the only one with this problem, but hundreds of others had the same concern. We are older than some and like to watch with closed captions for our hearing limitatons. If hearing is not a problem, the HMDI cable will work fine. One thing all the people on the forum agreed on was that you cannot get closed captions with the HDMI cable. One person said she had good luck with the one wire video. So that is what I tried and it worked. The simplest hook up! One video and two audio just as the manual showed. No Buzz and complete closed captions! The Editing function is time consuming and I am thinking a notebook with date, time and program name would be easier and quicker. I will try practicing a little more but I think the notebook is where I will end up. Otherwise I think this is a great recorder and am enjoing it. So much better than the VCR. –Update. After a week of use I find the making of titles is easier than I thought it would be. You can abbreviate titles to one or two word if you like.
